In a recent talk, Australian bestselling author and former TV journalist Cassie Hamer shared the pivotal moments that shaped her life and career. Her story is more than just about writing; it’s a powerful reflection on resilience, passion and the courage to follow your dreams.

Early life and passions

Cassie Hamer grew up in Sydney, where she developed two major passions: dancing and reading. At the age of 12, she faced a pivotal moment when she realised her limitations in ballet due to her physique. However, this setback led her to explore writing. Her first piece of writing was published in a dance magazine, igniting her interest in becoming a writer.

Transition to journalism

At 16, Cassie decided to pursue journalism, inspired by her idol, Jana Wendt. She wrote a letter to Steve Liebmann, the host of the Today Show, and secured a work experience opportunity. This experience boosted her dream of working in TV journalism. She studied journalism at Charles Sturt University and began her career in regional television. Cassie’s career in journalism took her from regional TV in Orange to Newcastle, where she covered significant events like the closure of BHP. However, her career took a turn when the newsroom in Newcastle closed, leading her back to Sydney. She worked for Channel 7, covering breaking news and experiencing the fast-paced, competitive world of television journalism.

Discovering a new world

A significant turning point in Cassie’s life came when she met her future husband, Sam. After marrying and welcoming three children, Cassie found herself immersed in the joys and demands of motherhood. Yet beneath the surface, she felt a quiet longing to reconnect with her creative self. Seeking more than routine, she took a bold step and enrolled in a creative writing degree. What began as a personal outlet soon became a powerful transformation, sparking a passion that carried her from writing short stories to becoming a bestselling author.

Inspiration and publication

Cassie’s inspiration came from reading Liane Moriarty’s work, which showed her the possibilities of writing about suburban life with depth and entertainment. She wrote her first novel, “After the Party,” which was published by Harper Collins. The novel’s success led to a contract for a second book.

Latest work: “The Stranger at the Table”

Cassie’s latest book, “The Stranger at the Table,” is a dark mystery about a family Christmas that turns violent. The story was inspired by her family’s tradition of inviting strangers to Christmas lunch and the complexities of family secrets. The book also explores themes of alcoholism, drawing from Cassie’s observations of contemporary motherhood and societal issues.
