 In April, Holdsworth, in partnership with Woollahra Council, hosted an engaging session of the Men’s Chat Group at Woollahra Library in Double Bay. The event focused on the rich history of Woollahra. 

The session was led by Eric Scott, who has extensive experience in community services and a deep knowledge of Woollahra’s history. Eric’s talk covered various aspects of the local area, including its indigenous heritage, the development of its suburbs, and notable historical events. 

With a population of over 55,000, Woollahra reflects a diverse cultural history. Eric shared insights from the 2021 Census, highlighting a blend of ancestries, including English, Australian, Irish, Chinese, and Greek. As an Eastern Suburbs aged care at home provider, Holdsworth recognises that understanding our community helps us provide more personalised and inclusive care.

Rushcutters Bay and Maritime History 

The group explored the origins of Rushcutters Bay, once called Blackburn Cove, named after the rushes harvested for thatching and basket-making. Eric spoke about the area’s maritime significance, including the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and its ties to the Royal Australian Navy. 

Notable figures 

The session highlighted several notable figures who have contributed to Woollahra’s history. These include Daniel Cooper, who benefited from the Victorian building boom, and John Piper, who played a significant role in the early development of the area. The discussion also touched on the literary contributions of Peggy Glanville-Hicks, one of Woollahra’s artistic pioneers. 

Historic homes and architecture 

Eric explored Woollahra’s distinctive architecture, including grand Victorian mansions and the one-story terraces in Paddington. 

Community connection and engagement 

The session also gave participants the chance to share personal stories and memories. Men’s Chat Group is more than a discussion, it’s part of our broader vision that promotes connections with the community.
