Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that has evolved into one of the world’s most effective forms of gentle exercise and meditation. With roots dating back over 700 years, this practice combines slow, flowing movements with deep breathing and mindful awareness to create what practitioners often call “meditation in motion.”

What exactly is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi originated as a martial art but has transformed into a health-focused practice emphasising internal energy cultivation rather than combat techniques. The movements are performed slowly and gracefully, with practitioners flowing seamlessly from one posture to another. Each movement has a specific purpose and meaning, often inspired by nature.

The practice is based on the Chinese philosophical concept of yin and yang – the idea that opposite forces complement each other to create balance. In Tai Chi, this translates to movements that alternate between expansion and contraction, rising and sinking and shifting weight from one foot to the other.

The philosophy behind the practice

Traditional Chinese medicine views Tai Chi as a way to cultivate and balance “qi”  – the vital energy that flows through the body. While you don’t need to embrace these philosophical concepts to benefit from Tai Chi, understanding them can deepen your appreciation of the practice.

The movements are designed to be performed with relaxed concentration, focusing the mind while gently exercising the body. This unique combination addresses both physical and mental wellbeing simultaneously, making it particularly valuable in our stress-filled modern world.
