- June Men’s Chat Group...
In partnership with Woollahra Council, our June Men’s Chat Group was an inspiring session, filled with warmth and friendship, as we explored the world of community craftsmanship and mental health.
Held at Woollahra Library, the event welcomed Peter Carlton, President of the Waverley Men’s Shed. Peter engaged in a lively discussion about the diverse range of projects undertaken at the Waverley Community Men’s Shed. He showed pictures and encouraged everyone to ask questions, making it an interactive and engaging session. Our group learned about woodworking and understood the value of community spaces in enhancing mental wellbeing.
Crafting and community
Peter guided the group through the various projects and activities at the Men’s Shed. He explained how woodworking and other hands-on activities provide a therapeutic outlet for members, helping to improve mental health and build a sense of accomplishment. He highlighted the importance of creativity and manual skills in maintaining mental agility and emotional balance.
Our group learned about the Men’s Shed operates a hub of creativity and support, with every project reflecting the dedication and skill of its members. The Shed is open from Monday to Wednesday, 10am to 3pm, offering a welcoming environment for all.
Peter shared tips on woodworking techniques, covering everything from basic tool use to advanced crafting methods. He emphasised the importance of precision and patience.
Community, inclusivity, and support
Beyond woodworking, Peter spoke about the broader mission of the Waverley Men’s Shed. Supported by organisations such as HAMZA and Office Works, the Shed holds an annual sale of items crafted by its members. This event showcases their work and raises funds to support their activities.
Peter highlighted the inclusive nature of the Men’s Shed, explaining that they welcome everyone in the community, including women. With 65 active members and an average of 20 participants each day, the Shed is a vibrant community space.
