Holdsworth Dementia Information Session

Dementia Awareness Information Session: Melissa Levi

In February, Holdsworth hosted an inspiring Dementia Awareness session led by the wonderful clinical psychologist and Talking Ageing founder, Melissa Levi, with the support of Woollahra Council. We welcomed 24 seniors and careers, interested to learn about the latest treatments and practical strategies for managing dementia.

Melissa shared heartfelt personal stories and insights, shedding light on the different types of dementia and their unique challenges. She emphasised the importance of creating meaningful connections and moments of joy, even amidst difficult times.

“Caring for someone with dementia can feel hard because it is hard,” Melissa mentioned. “But with the right strategies, we can make a significant difference in the quality of life of both patients and their carers.”

Various treatments were discussed, from occupational therapy to cognitive remediation programs, and Melissa shared her memorable SMILE acronym to help reduce dementia risk:

S: Social Support

M: Mediterranean Diet

I: Improve Heart Health

L: Learn Something New

E: Exercise

Melissa also touched on late-life anxiety and depression – noting that these conditions are treatable and manageable.

The session was filled with a supportive atmosphere that encouraged open dialogue and a sense of community. Participants left feeling hopeful, armed with practical advice and a good understanding of dementia care. We’re very grateful to Melissa and everyone who joined us!
