Navigating My Aged Care (MAC) in 2025: A comprehensive guide for Sydney residents

As we age, navigating the complexities of aged care can be a bit overwhelming. Whether you’re over 65 or a family member looking to support a loved one, understanding the My Aged Care (MAC) process is crucial. This guide will walk you through the steps to access the care you need, with a focus on services available in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and surrounding suburbs including Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and Bayside Councils.

The My Aged Care process

Step 1: Assess your needs

The first step in navigating My Aged Care is to think about the services or support you might need. If you’re unsure, our dedicated Community Care team at Holdsworth is here to assist you. In partnership with Woollahra Council, we offer free information sessions at various locations for Woollahra LGA residents. To learn about our upcoming sessions and book your spot, please call us at 02 9302 3600.

Step 2: Contact My Aged Care

Once you have an idea of the support you need, get in touch with My Aged Care to arrange an assessment. A representative from My Aged Care will visit you to discuss your needs and the services that might be helpful. This assessment is a crucial step in determining the level of care and support you require.

Step 3: What to expect

After the assessment, you may be offered funding under My Aged Care. These may include the Commonwealth Home Support (CHSP) and/or the Home Care Package, which will transition to Support at Home starting July 1, 2025. The type of support you qualify for will depend on your specific needs and the level of support required.

If you only need light assistance around the house, transport, or social activities, you will likely be offered funding under the Commonwealth Home Support. You can now pick a service provider, such as Holdsworth, to receive these services.

For those with more complex care needs, Home Care Packages provide a higher level of support. There are four levels of Home Care Packages, each offering a different amount of funding:

– Level 1: Basic care needs

– Level 2: Low-level care needs

– Level 3: Intermediate care needs

– Level 4: High-level care needs

Upon gaining approval for a Home Care Package, you have the freedom to select a provider to manage your package and deliver the necessary services. Holdsworth offers comprehensive Home Care Packages tailored to your individual requirements.
